Warning signs worth taking seriously

Harm builds gradually and rarely announces itself. If more than one of these is true, it is worth talking to someone.

  • Staking more than you decided to, or more often than you intended.
  • Chasing a loss — depositing again specifically to win back money you have already lost.
  • Gambling with money set aside for rent, bills, food or debt repayments.
  • Borrowing, selling belongings or using credit to fund a deposit.
  • Hiding the extent of it from a partner, family member or friend.
  • Feeling restless, low or irritable when you try to cut down or stop.
  • Gambling to escape stress, loneliness, anxiety or low mood.
  • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy, or in work, study or relationships.

Tools every licensed operator must give you

These are licence conditions in Great Britain, not favours. Every brand we review provides all of them, self-service, without needing to contact support.

  1. Deposit limits

Daily, weekly or monthly caps on what you can pay in. A decrease applies immediately; an increase must be held for 24 hours and reconfirmed, so a limit can never be raised on impulse mid-session.

  2. Loss and stake limits

Cap net losses or the maximum stake per round independently of what you have deposited.

  3. Reality checks and session reminders

A prompt at an interval you choose, showing how long you have been logged in and where you stand. Time distortion is a well-documented risk and this is a genuinely effective counter to it.

  4. Time-out or cool-off

Lock yourself out for 24 hours, a week, a month or six weeks. The account cannot be reopened early, by you or by support.

  5. Self-exclusion

A minimum of six months with the operator, with no marketing during it and no reopening on request. For a nationwide block covering every licensed British operator at once, register with GamStop instead.

  6. Bank-level blocks

Most major UK banks — including Monzo, Starling, Barclays, Lloyds, NatWest, HSBC and Santander — offer a free gambling block in-app that declines these transactions outright, usually with a cooling-off period before it can be lifted.

Staying in control

  • Decide the amount first. Set the figure you are content to lose entirely, set it as a deposit limit before your first deposit, and never raise it mid-session.
  • Treat it as the cost of entertainment. Never as income, an investment, or a route out of a debt.
  • Never chase. A loss is gone. Depositing again to recover it is the single most reliable way to turn a small loss into a large one.
  • Set a time limit too. Money is not the only thing being spent.
  • Do not gamble to cope. If you are staking money because you feel low, stressed or lonely, the underlying problem is what needs attention.
  • Never gamble on borrowed money. Credit cards have been prohibited for gambling in Great Britain since April 2020 for precisely this reason.
  • Keep other things in your week. Harm grows fastest when gambling is the only thing you look forward to.

There is no winning system

Every legitimate casino product carries a built-in mathematical advantage for the operator. It is published, it is audited, and it does not change. No staking pattern, no sequence, no piece of software and no strategy alters it — and anyone selling you one is selling you nothing. Outcomes are independent: a run of losses does not make a win more likely, and a run of wins does not make a loss overdue.

That is not an argument against gambling as entertainment. It is an argument against ever treating it as anything else.

Strictly 18 and over

It is a criminal offence in Great Britain for anyone under 18 to gamble, and for an operator to allow it. Accounts found to belong to someone under 18 are closed, stakes are returned and any winnings are forfeited. If children use your device, free filtering software such as Gamban, Net Nanny or Qustodio can block gambling content at source.

Our commitment

  • We only ever cover operators holding a current Gambling Commission licence.
  • We score safer gambling controls as a full criterion in every review, not as an afterthought.
  • We never present gambling as a way to make money, clear a debt or recover a loss.
  • We publish nothing designed to appeal to anyone under 18.
  • Every page on this website carries an 18+ notice and a route to free confidential help.
